It’s Wednesday, which means a brand-new episode of the “Up In The Blue Seats” podcast with Ron Duguay.
Ron opens the show talking about his longtime relationship with Neil Smith, the former Rangers general manager who led them to a Stanley Cup title in 1994. Smith then joins Ron and Larry Brooks.

Smith talks about his roots working with the Islanders in the 80’s, how he ended up getting hired as the Rangers GM in 1989, his philosophy of making big trades, dealing Sergei Zubov and why he defends it and the one trade he regrets. He also discusses why he hired Mike Keenan in 1993, what was going through his mind when they were losing 2-0 to the Devils in Game 6 of the ’94 Eastern Conference final and whether they could have won more titles if he didn’t make some of the trades he made. Smith also talks about how special the Stanley Cup 25th anniversary celebration was, if he feels unappreciated for what he did, if he should have gone all-in after getting Wayne Gretzky in 1996 and the difference between being a GM then and today.
