While the Rangers’ bid to add two-time Selke Trophy winner Mike Peca to their already-formidable roster was still on hold yesterday, the Islanders signed 26-year-old Josef Vasicek to bolster their center position.

The 6-4 Vasicek, who signed a one-year deal at $750,000, won the Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006 and went to the 2002 finals with the ‘Canes. He stands 61-87-148 in 379 career games with Carolina and Nashville.

Meanwhile, the Rangers were still expected to sign Peca, with the negotiations delay characterized as logistic rather than loggerheads.

The sides were hoping to get down to concrete numbers shortly on a contract for the 33-year-old unrestricted center, and it is not believed it will take long to hash out once Glen Sather gets down to the nitty-gritty.

The former Sabres and Islanders captain already has undergone a Rangers physical exam, checking his recovery from a major broken leg last season, and met with coach Tom Renney, who would doubtless welcome a defensive specialist with his grit and leadership abilities.

Peca, who has also played for Vancouver, Edmonton, and last season, Toronto, won the Selke as the league’s top defensive forward in 1997 with Buffalo and in 2002 with the Isles.

Former Ranger, Islander and Devil John Vanbiesbrouck, former Devil and Ranger Bobby Carpenter and former Devil Aaron Broten were selected yesterday for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
