A test of ‘Justice’
Jacob Gershman’s claim that social-justice schools indoctrinate students is not borne out by the evidence in his column (“Crackpot Schools,” PostOpinion, Dec. 1).
The article criticizes Bushwick School for Social Justice for using a mock trial to engage students in an important historical debate. Mock trials by definition present diverse perspectives, and student verdicts were not uniform — demonstrating that we prepare students to make sound, independent judgments.
More importantly, our educational approach is working. While our typical ninth-grade student arrives performing well below grade level, graduation rates exceed citywide averages, earning the school three consecutive “A” grades.
