CUNY’s clinical programs teach us how to listen to clients, apply the law to real-life problems and advocate in court – the bar exam does not test these skills (“CUNY Law Bounces Back,” Editorial, Nov. 28).

Instead, it tests rote memorization, tricks for multiple-choice tests and obscure areas of law.

A law school’s worth should not rest primarily on its bar-passage rate. The real barriers to quality legal education for “poor city kids” are standardized exams and Chancellor Goldstein’s academic policy.

We hope that future entrance to the profession will be premised on the real skills CUNY law graduates have used to serve New York City’s underrepresented for over 20 years.
