Maksim Gelman’s apparent rampage left sadness and fear for the families involved, New York and the country at large (“Train Hero’s Gory Ordeal,” Feb. 14).
It is, however, the brave men and women of New York City, like Police Officers Terrance Howell and Tamara Taylor, off-duty Detective Marcelo Razzo and rider Joseph Lozito who keeps me returning to New York each summer with my grandchildren.
Goodness does triumph over evil. This week, the city should be named the Brave Apple.

This man had at least one other arrest.
If the judicial system would do its job and incarcerate criminals, things like this would not happen.
How many lives were lost and families destroyed by this person?
It is time to rethink our legal system and stop giving lawyers
the loopholes that allow people like this to be set free.

I am very proud to say that I once worked with both Howell and Taylor.
The control and partnership they showed help take down a psycho. Under different circumstances, the outcome could have been far worse.
Without them, Saturday’s headline might have been “Slaughter on the 3 Train.”
Thank you for making me proud to say that I have been a member of the NYPD for 38 years. Officers Howell and Taylor, I salute you.
