Gov. Cuomo has come out of the closet (“Sock the Vote!,” PostScript Aug. 7).

He masqueraded as an independent Albany reformer, but he’s really a product of the Democratic Party machine.

Cuomo called a special election on Sept. 13 to fill Anthony Weiner’s vacated congressional seat — preempting primary challenges on the Democratic ticket.

As a result, Queens Democratic boss Joseph Crowley and Brooklyn boss Vito Lopez hand-picked Assemblyman David Weprin, behind closed doors, to run for the seat. A real primary would have allowed any registered Democrat with enough signatures to run in an open primary. But Cuomo decided that his friendship with the bosses was more important than opening up the party clubhouse to ordinary voters.
