We guess Ben Stiller was channeling Tugg Speedman, the dim-bulb actor he played in “Tropic Thunder,” when he praised Gov. Cuomo the other day.
“The governor stood by the film and television industry over the last eight years, supporting tax breaks and creating a lot of jobs — hundreds of thousands of jobs — for people in the film industry,” Stiller said, seated next to Cuomo at a bill-signing. “He’s always been there for the film industry in that way, and I really appreciated that.”
Hundreds of thousands of jobs? If it were so, Cuomo could bring universal employment for a heck of a lot less than the billions he’s burned on his AndyLand “economic development” pork.
Then again, Stiller was paying the gov back in words for the cold, hard taxpayer cash Cuomo has sent his way. He got to shoot his Showtime limited series “Escape from Dannemora” in the actual New York prison and qualify for his share of the state’s $420 million-a-year taxpayer subsidies for the industry.
Hollywood doesn’t need the handout, and plenty of productions would film in New York without the bribes. As the Empire Center for Public Policy’s E.J. McMahon notes, the program is “just an out-and-out giveaway to a wealthy industry.”
It’s only rubbing salt in the wound to have Ben Stiller unctuously praising Cuomo for putting other people’s money in his pocket.
