Mayor Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Nick Scopetta can certainly find other ways to save $9 million in the city budget instead of jeopardizing the good people of this city’s safety by closing fire companies at night (“FDNY’s Slash and Burn,” Dec. 5). Cut the salaries of those civilians giving “integrity” tests and random drug tests to firefighters, which come up with nothing 99.9% of the time, or postpone the next academy class. There are safer ways to save money than gambling with people’s lives.

Engine companies are closed at night when fast water on fire is the best firefighting procedure.

These cuts at night make no sense, as someone will be hurt.

Engine 4 lost its whole company on 9/11. Americans all said, “Never forget,” but the FDNY hierarchy has short a memory.
