The Issue: Protests by CUNY students over the decision by the school’s board to raise tuition rates.

***

CUNY students are howling over a $1-a-day increase in tuition (“CUNY Kids Are Spoiled for a Fight,” Andrea Peyser, Dec. 1)?

I didn’t see any of them protesting outside the offices of the MTA when fares increased or when Starbucks raised the price of a latte.

Andrea Peyser is right on target with her comments about the CUNY students and their protest.

When an incident like this happens in a college environment, I am reminded of the saying “Spare the rod and spoil the child.”

It might be better phrased “Use the rod.” Maybe students and professors will get the message.

Peyser is way off the mark regarding most of the kids who attend City University. Most would not be attending college at all if it hadn’t been affordable.

If Peyser really thinks that these kids will get a free ride with financial aid, she didn’t do her homework.

These days, just being unable to afford school does not make you eligible.

Instead of protesting a tuition increase, CUNY students had better understand that they have the best deal in the country.

The decision by Baruch to cancel classes as a result of the CUNY protest demonstrates an incredible lack of leadership on its part.

It’s outrageous that the college felt that the only way to ensure the First Amendment rights of its students was to trample on the academic rights of others.
