Let’s hope state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s look at charitable fund-raising bears fruit.

Cuomo last week reported that barely 39 cents of every dollar raised by telemarketers in New York actually made it to the intended charities.

The rest went to the fund-raisers.

Cuomo looked at 553 campaigns, which raised some $180 million – of which $108 million went to telemarketers.

Cuomo has performed a valuable service, giving the public necessary information with which to demand changes – or donate elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the charities themselves need to come up with more effective campaign methods – lest the causes they champion continue to miss out on the public’s good intentions.
