Unbelievable: Ex-con ex-state Sen. Carl Kruger is reportedly eyeing a comeback with a run for City Council in 2021.

“Rumor has it he wants to reinvent himself,” ex-City Councilman and former Kruger aide Mike Nelson told Kings County Politics. That would take truly monumental chutzpah.

In April 2012, the 18-year senator, a former Finance Committee chairman, got handed seven years in federal prison for pocketing $500,000 in bribes in exchange for taking official action. He pleaded guilty to violating his oath of office in order to enrich himself and his cronies.

The judge declared Kruger’s four-year pay-to-play scheme to be “daggers to the heart of government.” The prosecutor called his offenses “venal” and “a sophisticated crime with a sophisticated design.”

At sentencing, Kruger admitted “to bringing discredit” to the Legislature and betraying his constituents.

The essence of public service is honoring the trust of the governed. Kruger did the opposite, abusing the power granted him by the people of Brooklyn and the state of New York for his own craven interest.

At his sentencing nearly seven years ago, he claimed: “I will be haunted with that reality for the rest of my life.” Guess the shame didn’t last that long after all.

New York law is so kind to corrupt lawmakers that Kruger still gets to draw a $70,000 pension “earned” by his “service.” He should count himself lucky, and stay retired.
