It seems somehow unfair that the unique joy and often dramatic splendor of Bill Gallo’s cartoons might obscure how terrific a writer he was in the Daily News’ Sunday paper (“Bill Gallo, 1922-2011,” Editorial, May 12).
I’d see Gallo every once in a while at Sardi’s — modest, as always, but never without a New Yorker’s innate elegance.
I’d like to say these are the things I thought of first when learning of Gallo’s passing, but, truthfully, all I could envision were Backyard Bertha and Yuchie, knowing that they were right around the corner.

Thank you to The Post for giving Gallo his due on your pages.
As a great cartoonist, he gave us a little respite from the bad news of the day.
He was a proud American, having served in the Marine Corps in the battle of Iwo Jima.
He will truly be missed. Thanks and RIP, Bill Gallo.
