The Issue: A framework for teacher evaluations agreed to by the state, teachers union and Board of Ed.

***

Congratulations to Gov. Cuomo for his leadership in the teacher-evaluation process (“It’s a Deal,” Editorial, Feb. 17).

Nobody wants a bad teacher.

Perhaps now we can focus on the main problem in education — the lack of personal responsibility augmented by the change in family structure, not the handful of incompetent teachers who should find another profession.

Education will work to the fullest benefit of students only if there is shared accountability among teachers, administrators, city and state officials, the federal government and, most important, parents.

Everybody needs to work together instead of pointing fingers elsewhere to shirk responsibility or keep their jobs.

Before celebrating the teacher-evaluation system, we should realize it’s just a framework and requires more negotiations.

Unfortunately, it still relies on test scores and administrative judgment, which is not always fair.

It may sound good to those who don’t know much about our education system, but the fact is the evaluations will make very little difference in the education of our children and will eliminate very few inadequate teachers,
