THE ISSUE: The alleged beating of a tourist by police in Ocean Beach, Fire Island.

It is disgraceful that Ocean Beach acting Police Chief George Hesse stomped on a man so hard a couple of years ago that the man became unconscious (“You’ll Get Burned If You Break the Rules,” March 28).

Where did Hesse think he worked, in Singapore, where tourists and others are commonly manhandled this way for littering and other offenses?

Just because you wear a badge doesn’t make you a good cop. The punks on Fire Island who call themselves cops deserve to get thrown off the police force.

The public pays for protection, not brutality.
