Your editorial that discusses the saving of some firehouses fails to consider the important issue that some should be closed or relocated (“The Council Strikes for Safety,” Jan. 7).

Take my neighborhood firehouse, Engine 6 in lower Manhattan. Since its establishment in 1970, the whole neighborhood has changed. The firehouse is now next to a synagogue and across from a hospital, and because the NYPD keeps many streets closed for security since 9/11, Engine 6 is often stuck in traffic.

Would one locate a firehouse in its present spot in 2011? I think not.

The firefighters do an excellent job, but we are talking budgets and efficiency here.
