The Issue: Mayor Bloomberg’s concerns about the First Amendment rights of the OWS movement.

***

See what happens when you let things fester (“Mayor’s Free ‘Dumb’ of Speech,” Michael Goodwin, Nov. 6)?

The mayor’s overzealous free-speech posture and fear of police-brutality charges have led to this mess. This is a stunning abdication of responsibility.

Give the protesters four hours’ notice to vacate and direct them to newly designated zones for demonstration.

Just get them out of Zuccotti Park.

It seems odd that a mayor as controlling as Bloomberg, who tells people what they can eat and where they can smoke, has wimped out when it comes to OWS.

If I were a smoker and lived in New York City, I would not obey a single smoking law.

If anyone complained, I’d tell them I was with OWS. At the rate he’s going, Bloomberg would probably have the person complaining arrested.

God forbid we allow any criticism of the deadbeats in Zuccotti Park.

OWS is fighting for all of us.

When injustice becomes law, citizens have a duty to resist.

I’m sorry this is an inconvenience, but the protesters are fighting for the First Amendment and against corporate greed and a government that’s been sold to the highest bidder.

If they succeed, we will have a better world.

From New York to Washington, bashing the Constitution has become fair play.

The people responsible for upholding the law are afraid of the very public they are supposed to serve.

Actions speak louder than words. Government is supposed to be working for us, not the misfits occupying Wall Street.

Mayor Bloomberg’s playing-it-safe style has only made the situation worse.

He tried giving the protesters an inch, but they took the park.

Shame on Bloomberg for allowing this to continue and for not arresting these lawbreakers.

Every day on my way to work I have to walk past this filthy refugee camp that used to be a beautiful park.

The stench is unbearable.

Why should I be heckled on my way to work to support my family and pay my taxes — the same taxes that are being wasted providing security for these kids who want the nanny state to get even bigger?

So shame on Bloom-berg. But also shame on President Obama, for pitting neighbor against neighbor and rich against the poor, just so he can keep his job.
