* As Ralph Peters suggests, Pakistani extremists may tout the torrential rains as a judgment from on high (“Pakistan Drowning,” Editorial, Aug. 18).

Peters comments, “Sound incredible? Look at some of the things educated Americans believe.”

Even as New York fries, Russia dries and Pakistan drowns, many educated Americans believe that global warming is a hoax,

despite the fact that climate scientists predicted these phenomena in the mid-1980s.

President Asif Ali Zardari’s regime may be the first governmental casualty of climate change — it is unlikely to be the last.

But, as Peters points out, it’s easier to believe in an international scientific conspiracy than it is to face the facts and act on them.

* No wonder Pakistan is literally drowning: The country faced two weeks of devastating rain.

Peters’ article also shows a Pakistani mother under a piece of plastic with her children, who are probably starving.

I can understand why we Americans will always help in cases of disastrous events by sending helicopters to bring food and other aide to the innocent.
