Apparently speaking for many progressives, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Bx/Queens) said Tuesday she will vote against President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion, Senate-passed infrastructure bill Thursday unless she and her fellow progressives get their way. Go ahead, AOC: Make our day.

The lefties want hard assurances that they’ll also get Senate passage of the $3.5 trillion spending bill for massive Medicaid and Medicare expansion, new climate-change initiatives and so on. In a July town hall, AOC said progressives are “standing up,” prepared to “tank” the infrastructure bill.

Vermont’s proudest socialist is also aboard the “tank it” train: Sen. Bernie Sanders says that passing the bipartisan bill on its own “will end all leverage that we have to pass” the spendapalooza measure.

The bipartisan infrastructure bill contains some good stuff: funding for roads, bridges and other actual major projects. But that’s only a tenth of its spending ($110 billion), and it comes with serious strings such as requiring all projects to pay inflated “prevailing wages” to unionized workers.

So we’re happy to see progressives shoot their hostage (if they actually can): There’s no way the nation can afford the ransom they’re demanding — an economy-crushing mix of exorbitant tax hikes and new federal debt to turn America into an old-fashioned welfare state.

If it’s infrastructure and spendapalooza or nothing at all, so be it. Nada it is.
