GOOD-BYE, VITO
Rep. Vito Fossella’s conviction last week in Virginia for drunk driving should also be the final nail in his political coffin.
If Fossella – the sole Republican in the city’s congressional delegation – harbors thoughts about a return to public life after his current term ends, he should abandon them now.
So, too, should those misguided enough to suggest to him that he has a future in New York politics.
True, a single drunk-driving conviction shouldn’t necessarily render a politician unfit for future office.
But Fossella’s arrest last May led to the news that the married-with-children congressman was involved in a long-term affair with a Virginia woman – with whom he’d had another child.
Drunk driving.
Affair.
Out-of-wedlock child.
Talk about hitting the trifecta.
Fossella later announced that he wouldn’t be a candidate for re-election. That was wise, for his time has passed – something that both he and any members of his political machine should know.
Let his district move on.
Fossella shouldn’t be thinking about this election year – or future campaigns, for that matter.
Aside from avoiding a five-day jail sentence, Fossella needs to concentrate on raising his families. Both of them.
