The next time John DiPaolo plans to attack a proposal, he should do his homework (“Overworked Schoolkids?” PostOpinion, Feb. 4).

DiPaolo criticizes my resolution, which calls on the Department of Education to put reasonable limits on homework given to grade-school students, by citing a documentary about homework for high school students.

Virtually every study shows there is no correlation between homework and achievement in grade school. In fact, too much homework has been shown to actually hurt children.

Kids need time to be kids while they’re young. DiPaolo and I agree that a child’s time at home should be used responsibly and usefully.

As the parent of two public grade-school children, I believe that family and healthy activity accomplish that goal as much as a textbook.
