Today marks the 40th anniversary of the attack on the USS Liberty by Israel’s sea and air forces in international waters, in which 34 U.S. sailors were killed and another 174 wounded.

One Medal of Honor, two Navy Crosses, 11 Silver Stars, 20 Bronze Stars and 204 Purple Hearts were awarded to the crewmen, and the ship was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.

The ship never sailed again and was sold for scrap.
