THE ISSUE: Last week’s withdrawal of the British Army from Northern Ireland.

John O’Sullivan finds it more comforting to view the IRA’s war on British terrorism as completely ruthless than to examine the darkness at the heart of unionist, supremacist values (“A Troubled Peace,” PostOpinion, Aug. 12).

I had hoped that with the withdrawal of the British Army from Northern Ireland, the country was finally on the road to a lasting peace.

But, as O’Sullivan points out, there are issues that have not been fully resolved. The two groups involved seek to dominate, which could lead to a civil war, and the British Army could return.

It seems to me that only when Catholics and Protestants see themselves as Irish men and women, first and foremost, can lasting peace be achieved.
