Japan’s winning women
Oh, the agony of de-feet.
In one of the most thrilling soccer matches ever played, a plucky Japanese team upset the heavily favored US squad in the Women’s World Cup final.
Japan came back twice from one-goal deficits, including once in overtime, to tie 2-2 and later win 3-1 on penalty kicks.
For the US — in its third Cup final, while Japan was in its first — the loss was heartbreaking.
But the Japanese were looking to boost their nation’s morale after this year’s horrific earthquake, tsunami and radiation leak — certainly a worthy goal.
They got their wish.
Of course, both squads deserve huge thanks for staging a terrific match.
But congratulations especially to the Japanese for managing to send their compatriots an uplifting surprise after so much misery.
