Dr. E. Fuller Torrey’s article (“It’s a Mad, Mad World,” PostScript, Sept. 13) foresees disaster in relocating psychiatric patients, as ordered by Brooklyn Judge Nicholas Garaufis.

But Torrey fails to note that New Yorkers live in psychiatric holding pens because so little supportive housing and appropriate treatment programs exist in the community.

Successful programs, such as Housing First and Community Access, show what can be done. They deserve credit, encouragement and the funding to expand.

Unfortunately, Torrey fixates on medication while ignoring equal, and probably more important, aspects of treatment.
