In “Class Dismissed” (Maureen Callahan, PostScript, Nov. 14), Lawrence Mishel states that “people with a college degree are the new working class.”

What did we expect? Our society’s demand that everyone attend college, whether they are worthy or not, has led to a watering down of college degrees.

College should be reserved for children willing and able to learn, not for the purpose of increasing starting pay.

To state that financial deregulation and the decline of unions has led to less jobs is untrue. It’s my opinion that unions, along with a raising of the minimum wage, are the two biggest reasons that jobs disappear. Small and medium-sized businesses often have to cut the size of their payroll due to unionization and the raising of the minimum wage.
