If Police Capt. Barry Gelbman should happen to break a leg and no longer be able to ride, make sure he gets the same veterinarian and the same remedy: death (“Cop-Horse Boss Is in Hot Saddle,” April 13).

We would not want him to suffer the pain and inconvenience of a month-long recuperation.

I am appalled and disgusted with Gelbman’s decision to euthanize three retired police horses. As I understand it, their ailments were treatable and they could have been transported after treatment and recuperation.

Even if budget issues were the reason, Gelbman could have tried to find a way to have the horses placed at a foster farm closer to New York until they were ready to travel.

These fine animals worked for the city for years, and this is their reward?

As a horse lover and owner of a retired NJ police horse, I am recommending that Gelbman be transferred out of the mounted division and get off his high horse.
