In “Dog Fight on Posh Fifth Avenue,” (May 31) Andrea Peyser writes, “I have no use for animals, except at a distance. (Or on a plate.)”

Pets provide companionship and unconditional love, both of which are key to happiness.

Research shows that while we think that receiving support is a key to happiness, providing support is perhaps even more important. Pets require our constant attention and care.

A growing body of evidence confirms the holistic health benefits people gain from animals, including social, mental, physical, psychological and emotional health.

The health benefits of animals can include reduced blood pressure and risk of heart disease and an increased sense of well-being.

My advice to Peyser is “get a dog.” If she had a pet, perhaps she would learn how to love.
