Benny Avni’s May 14 article “Nuke Nonsense” (PostOpinion) perpetuates a line of reasoning that was thankfully repudiated in the last election.

While the Obama administration has a ways to go in restoring a careful approach to security, it has taken steps to reduce the secretive culture of the previous administration, while asserting the need for dialogue and diplomacy as the first stage in a process where military engagement is the last.

We have repeatedly advised UN delegates that they have “good-faith” obligations in the disarmament field, including sincere negotiations, weapons transparency, real agreements on disarmament and nonproliferation and robust compliance mechanisms.

It is time to stop the charade and join with other countries to build a strong and verifiable regime to end threats from weapons of mass destruction once and for all.
