THE ISSUE: Whether the Yankees 2010 season can be blamed on Derek Jeter’s home contruction.

***

I was always wondering why the New York Yankees didn’t make it to the World Series in 2010, and now Yankee co-owner Hank Steinbrenner has finally explained it: Derek Jeter built an expensive house (“Out at Home!” Feb. 22).

I can just hear what the late Phil Rizzuto would have said when hearing the news: “Holy cow, Hank.”

Now that the Yankees are soliciting season-ticket packages, they should throw in the closer — a weekend at Jeter’s mansion.

That would get me to buy one.

Of course Jeter can do whatever he wants with his ridiculous salary, but his need to erect a 33,000 square foot palace in Tampa says a lot about him.

Rather than being a humble guy, this grotesque mansion reveals him as another self-involved celebrity who has the need to show off his wealth.

Does he not feel embarrassed at such excess?

For the Yankee hierarchy to publicly question the commitment of one of the all-time Yankee greats is simply disgraceful.

Jeter has done everything to represent the Yankees with pride and professionalism over the past 15 years, and he is about to reach 3,000 hits.

Where have the owners been? Probably spending all their time raising ticket prices and not watching any ballgames.

Jeter has had a lifetime batting average in his career of .300 or better with no scandals.

In 1999 and 2000, Jeter hit .349 and .339, and in 2001, .311 — which makes three banner years.

No one has any right to complain about him building a dreamhouse.
