Your editorial (“Who’ll Fight for Kids?” Sept. 22) completely misrepresents my position on mayoral control of NYC schools.

Let me state clearly that I am a longtime supporter of mayoral control and an ardent believer that the buck must stop with the mayor. I would not support any measure that would roll back the tremendous progress we have made over the last six years.

I do support some improvements to the legislation, like transferring legislative authority from the State Legislature to the City Council, so that local officials will have a greater voice in the education of our children.

But to argue that I would in any way support a “gutting” of the legislation is intellectually dishonest.

I have long worked in partnership with the administration and with Chancellor Joel Klein. When mayoral control comes up for debate in Albany, you can bet I will be up there fighting for the continued progress of both our schools and our students.

Christine C. Quinn

Speaker, City Council
