I disagree with “Melting Not” (Raakhee Mirchandani, PostScript, March 15). Mirchandani is searching for commonality in a partner — not ethnicity or race.

Two people from the same racial background could meet and have absolutely nothing in common, including the “family first” aspect Mirchandani points out.

A white person with similar parentage could have the same, if not more, in common with us than someone raised in our exact racial atmosphere. The number of interracial marriages may have fallen simply because more people have immigrated, so there are more options available within your own race. It may have little to do with compatibility — which is when two people, regardless of background, find that they have the right things in common. And that commonality, often, is the base of love.
