Re-Call box?
As someone who has painted over graffiti on and cleaned garbage out of all but useless fire-call boxes, I propose that they be removed, sandblasted and sold to the public as pieces of city history (“Four-Alarm Overreach,” Editorial, Aug. 17).
There is one firebox on the corner of Westminster and Cortelyou roads, not even half a block from our local fire station. Really?

The Post is right to blast Judge Robert Sweet for blocking deactivation of out-of-date and expensive-to-maintain fire-alarm call boxes.
Most of these signals were installed when few had telephones, and they saved lives.
But technology today, including that available to the disabled, make the boxes unnecessary.
Shut them down, but do not remove them. They are beautifully cast, iconic pieces that help define the city. Remove the electronics, and place a bronze relief of a firefighter, police officer or other hero lost on 9/11 as a neighborhood tribute.
