Redistrict right
Michael Benjamin is wrong (“The Right Way To Redistrict Now,” PostOpinion, Aug. 2).
The state Constitution delegates redistricting authority to the Legislature — one reason I support Gov. Cuomo’s bill, which preserves an important role for the Legislature in the process.
Benjamin wrongly insists that there is not enough time to establish an independent redistricting process for our state.
Nearly every good-government group and redistricting professional believe there is.
Worst of all, Benjamin argues for a population deviation between legislative districts that would allow for congressional districts that differ in population by over 30,000 people and still be considered “equal.”
That’s unfair and hardly abides by the principle of one person, one vote. It is a long-used tool used to pack certain districts to diminish the electoral power of its citizens.
