San Francisco politicians are singing a new tune on crime, but can they connect the dots?
Mayor London Breed announced Tuesday that she wants more funding for police to combat skyrocketing crime, particularly open-air drug dealing, car break-ins and retail theft.
“It’s time the reign of criminals who are destroying our city, it is time for it to come to an end,” Breed said, vowing “to be more aggressive with law enforcement . . . and less tolerant of all the bulls–t that has destroyed our city.”
That’s a 180 from last year, when Breed cut San Francisco’s police budget by $120 million. But she sounds like she means it.
But what will she do about progressive District Attorney Chesa Boudin, who’s basically opposed to doing his job? In 2021, he only charged 46 percent of theft arrests, a new low even for him. If she’s serious, she’ll back the drive to recall Boudin come November.
’Frisco’s crime wave even prompted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to condemn the “smash and grab” mobs Wednesday: “We cannot have that lawlessness become the norm.” Will she take the next step of condemning the entire “defund” movement, and speak out in support of law enforcement nationwide?
Democratic policies — via “reform” DAs like Boudin, and state and local lawmakers’ easing of penalties and handcuffing of police — are plainly behind the national crime wave. If Pelosi & Co. don’t at least tacitly admit that, and change course, the crime won’t stop until voters kick the permissive pols out of power.
