The man being run over by the police van in Long Beach was an accident waiting to happen (“LI Beach Horror,” May 27).

While I was on Jones Beach last summer, these police vans rode dangerously between sunbathers lying on the sand and children running close to the shore line, where it is crowded.

There is no need for them to ride near the shore, as there is plenty of room on the sand closer to the dunes. It is idiotic and arrogant to ride so close to people just trying to enjoy the beach.

Luckily, the man in Long Beach was not killed. Someone won’t be so lucky the next time.
