State Senate Democrats staged a noisy — but effective — stunt Wednesday to highlight their GOP colleagues’ continued backing for their indicted leader, Dean Skelos.

Republicans wouldn’t even allow a vote on a resolution to permit a vote on a resolution ousting Skelos as majority leader.

It was political theater at its best: lots of screaming and turmoil, capped by a walkout by the Democrats. And the point was sound. Assembly Democrats (eventually) dumped their leader, Sheldon Silver, after his corruption indictment.

Sure, they did it reluctantly and under public pressure — the Dems are no shining angels of reform here. But they did it.

The clock is now ticking for the Republicans. Will they move more quickly than the Democrats did by removing Skelos and showing they won’t tolerate US Attorney Preet Bharara’s allegations of corruption?

They can’t move soon enough.
