Instead of a milktoast presentation about community affairs, the Police Department elected to expose its newest officers to opinions from some of the department’s harshest critics, with whom The Post and others disagree (“Jive at the Apollo,” Editorial, June 23).

In just a few days these recruits will hit the streets after six months of the best law-enforcement training anywhere. Better that it include exposure to some of the unvarnished attitudes that await them than a more sanguine, timid approach.

The result of all of their training, including the immersion program in community relations, is police officers who are better prepared for the demands of safeguarding the public in this, the most complex law-enforcement environment on earth.
