Not only do bicyclists need red lights, apparently so do city councilmen.

The city recorded 4,463 cyclists injured in crashes last year. But Reynoso doesn’t care. He says, “It is not sensible to have to stop and go at every sign.”

A pain in the neck, sure. But not sensible?

Go tell that to Mike Wittman, whose wife, Jill Tarlov, was killed in Central Park last year by a cyclist speeding in the wrong lane.

Expanding cycling in the city has already raised risks. Looser rules can only add to the danger — especially when you have clearly inconsiderate cyclists like Reynoso, who admits he breezes right through stop signs and red lights “when appropriate.”

Andrew Albert of the NYC Transit Riders Council notes the many bicyclists already ignore the rules of the road, and warns that “to legitimize that behavior would be a huge mistake.”

When Reynoso brings the measure before the City Council on Tuesday, here’s hoping his colleagues drop it in a deep pothole.
