A Lower Manhattan Development Corp. scheme to appoint itself to build a temporary $800,000 Ground Zero viewing platform for the 9/11 10th anniversary commemoration collapsed of its own weight yesterday. Hurrah for that.
The LMDC board decided not to go ahead with the boondoggle — a day after this page noted that the architects of the Deutsche Bank demolition scandal can’t be trusted with a Tinker Toy set.
So now it appears that the Port Authority and the 9/11 Memorial Foundation will undertake the project.
Left unexplained, of course, is the necessity of a platform in the first place.
Little steps for little feet, we guess.
Meanwhile, the LMDC board did find time to dig $3.2 million out of its fat bank account to keep itself in existence for another year — despite the lack of any socially redeeming purpose to justify the spending.
New York is supposed to be broke.
Time to toss the LMDC overboard and save a few bucks.
