Four months after gaining the Super Bowl victory that had eluded him for 15 years, New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan chose to go out on top.

He announced his retirement Monday.

He should have no regrets.

Strahan was the Giants’ most dominant defensive player since Lawrence Taylor: He exits as Giants sacks leader for a season (22½ in ’01) and a career (1411/2). He was also an unquestionable team leader.

Indeed, even last year – when he toyed with retirement at the start of the season – he remained a productive force with nine sacks.

He led a dominant defense that brought the franchise its first Super Bowl victory in 17 years, beating the undefeated New England Patriots in an upset for the ages.

Thanks for 15 years of gridiron greatness, Michael. And good luck.
