After several years of protests, rallies and direct appeals from kids, the de Blasio administration has finally granted Success Academy Queens families a suitable permanent middle school. Their persistence and perseverance paid off at last — but families shouldn’t have to lobby their hearts out just so their children can continue their education.

In August, Success Academy Ozone Park Middle School will open its doors to 250 fifth and sixth graders. The new space will be in a private, stand-alone building, located on 128th Street in Queens. The former Catholic school has a gymnasium/auditorium and cafeteria and is large enough to accommodate all middle-school students moving up from two primary schools, SA Rosedale and SA South Jamaica.

City Hall will pretend this was never in doubt, but in fact it clearly intended to stall forever, with an eye to forcing the families to abandon the Success network by leaving it literally nowhere to teach these children. Only pressure from Rep. Greg Meeks and other Queens elected officials got the Department of Education to finally bend.

Cross your fingers that the next mayor and his or her chancellor have the decency to follow the law and parents’ wishes and stop trying to deny charter schools the room to grow.
