The term “default” can be applicable in a number of different areas. Those who are computer literate recognize it as a value that is assigned automatically to an operating system and remains in effect until overridden.

In a sense, it can also be considered a fall-back position.

Today, journalists, who often seem to be suffering from a failure to communicate anything substantive, usually fall back and rely on the Sarah Palin default — as Kyle Smith does in his PostScript article, “Palin 2.0” (June 5).

When in doubt, hammer Sarah Palin.
