The economy is in crisis and it is easy to push the panic button about the city or the state imposing new taxes (“Tax Payrolls, Kill Jobs” Editorial, Dec. 5). But leaders should not be afraid to tax fairly and spend wisely to support essential programs and services. Taxes are not a dirty word. In the 1970s, New Yorkers learned what happens when essential services are shut down. By raising revenue through progressive, fair taxation, state and city leaders can support essential programs that will strengthen New York. Courageous and creative leadership is desperately needed to keep New York’s communities strong, especially during this difficult time. Leaders must raise revenue appropriately and preserve core services for New Yorkers.
