First they came for the prostitutes and three-card monte hustlers, and good for them.
Then they came for the peep shows and seedy strip clubs, and hurrah again.
And now, Times Square isn’t even safe for luxury toilet billboards.
Is that a clampdown too far?
Not according to Times Square Church, an 8,000-member interdenominational congregation that’s suing to stop the ad from going up on the building the church occupies.
On Monday, a judge signed an injunction banning the billboard for now.
The case, she said, “presents novel and significant issues.” No kidding.
The ad in question – for a combination toilet/bidet – features a row of bare bottoms with smiley faces drawn over them. You can see why the church doesn’t want that image greeting its congregants.
What’s needed most, however, is some historical perspective. That a thriving church in the middle of Times Square would take issue with such a mildly crude billboard shows just how far the area – and the city – have come.
Hallelujah – makes your cheeks want to smile.
