WELCOME TO THE FLEET
USS Intrepid may be “on leave” for overhaul in Bayonne, N.J., but that hardly means tourists and New Yorkers are without an impressive array of warships to explore during this year’s Fleet Week.
Today, the amphibious assault carrier USS Wasp will be open to the public from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Pier 90.
Elsewhere, ships moored in Staten Island will welcome visitors, Navy SEALs are hosting a “static and challenge” display (also at Pier 90) and a Marine Corps helicopter demonstration will take place in Eisenhower Park, Long Island.
(A complete list of the entire week’s events is online at fleetweek.navy.mil.)
Now in its 20th year, Fleet Week is the city’s annual celebration of sea services, when sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen visit the Big Apple – and New Yorkers so inclined have a chance to get a glimpse of military life.
Should your interaction with America’s servicemen be confined to your local watering hole, buy them a round – they deserve nothing less.
