At this point, it’s a no-brainer: Postpone New York’s presidential primary, now set for April 28, plus all special elections and village ones and the May school-board voting, until June 23 — when other primaries are already scheduled and there’s a decent chance the lockdowns will be done.

Consolidating the voting will be a money-saver, too — and every level of government needs all the savings to be found now. Don’t let the Board of Elections waste cash on “mail check” notices (as the law now requires by March 30) for April 28 voting that’s highly unlikely to come off.

This leaves Queens with Sharon Lee as acting borough president for a few more months — but by all accounts she’s doing great, offering decisive, independent leadership.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in consultation with the Legislature, can use the extra time to look at measures that may be needed, including enhanced rights to absentee (mail-in) voting and even online registration.

We’re not fans of any of this, but an emergency requires flexibility. In return, reformers who love all these changes shouldn’t insist on making them permanent.

Get through this while keeping our democracy intact, then fight about the longterm rules.
