Bitcoin is making waves again after its value skyrocketed in the stock market in the past few months. One bitcoin currently equates to $51,576.20.

While cryptocurrency has seen exponential growth in the past three years, it’s at an all-time high today. Big tech giants such as Twitter’s Jack Dorsey and Tesla’s Elon Musk have endorsed bitcoin, which has allowed its notoriety to increase.

For instance, Tesla announced in an SEC filing earlier this month that it has bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin. The company also said it would start accepting bitcoin as a payment method for its products.

Recently, Dorsey, 44, partnered with rapper Jay-Z to create an endowment to fund bitcoin development in Africa and India. The duo is putting in 500 bitcoins, which is currently worth about $25.9 million, in the endowment called ₿trust.

As a crash course, bitcoin is an online monetary system independent of governments or banks, making transactions more direct. Each payment is documented and verified through blockchain — an online, shared database.

The upside? Transactions are more direct and can be completed in minutes or days, rather than the traditional closing period of weeks or months. A downside? Capital gains tax can apply. And, of course, with market volatility, the currency is still a risky bet — although that hasn’t dimmed its popularity.
