It’s a rite of passage!
A historic townhouse in Manhattan’s West Village neighborhood that connects, via a hidden passageway (and a charming garden), to a quaint carriage house in its backyard has just hit the market for $7.99 million.
Curbed first reported the listing.
Built around 1830 for local merchant William Carr, the three-story Renaissance Revival landmark contains four bedrooms in the main house and one bedroom in the so-called back house — a delightful rarity of older New York buildings — as well as 5½ bathrooms between the two structures.
The main townhouse, located at 10 Bedford St., also boasts a roof deck, hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace.
The carriage house started its life as a smokehouse for meats and was eventually converted into a residence in the 1930s, according to the listing and the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report.
The 189-year-old home is not exactly move-in ready: The main house is currently configured as two separate duplexes, and the charming backyard cottage is need of a gut renovation.
Pamela D’Arc, Clayton Orrigo and Stephen Ferrara of Compass have the listing.
