A West Hollywood condo tower long favored by A-list celebrities is now looking for its next prominent resident — and one who has some especially deep pockets, to boot.

The Wall Street Journal reports a penthouse inside Sierra Towers will hit the market for $39.5 million — a price that stands to smash a condo-sale record for Los Angeles. The apartment building, which dates to the mid-1960s, has counted luminaries including Sidney Poitier, Joan Collins, Courteney Cox and Katy Perry as residents.

The present record for a City of Angels condo sale isn’t too far off — $39.2 million for a 2025 deal at the Century, a Robert A.M. Stern-designed edifice right by the Fox Studio lot in Century City.

The sellers of the approximately 7,400-square-foot aerie are the Chicago philanthropists Dan Fischel and Sylvia Neil. Fischel was once the dean of the prestigious law school at the University of Chicago; Neil served as its associate dean. Fischel is also president of Compass Lexecon consulting firm. They purchased the residence for $17.5 million in 2021 and invested “many, many millions of dollars” into finishing it as it was just raw space at that time.

The couple had a daughter residing in Los Angeles at that time and sought a pied-à-terre. They toured the unit and immediately felt it was a good fit — and when they found out it would be auctioned by its owner, an heir to the Twinkie fortune, they submitted that $17.5 million bid. It ended up being successful, and even before the auction even took place.

Fischel and Neil then spent five years outfitting the dwelling to their tastes, hiring the New York architectural firm Workshop/APD to handle the overhaul. Though it recently reached completion, the couple has never spent a night inside.

“My wife may have been more inclined to do that, but for me … I just want to leave it as an untouched jewel for the people who are fortunate enough to be the next owner,” Fischel told The Journal.

Whoever snaps it up will get quite the gem indeed. Perks include private elevator access, white oak flooring, custom white oak millwork and hammered bronze accents. There are three bedrooms, a kitchen with a breakfast bar — and even a gym and a media room. A stone fireplace anchors open living and dining spaces.

Outside, there’s an approximately 5,500-square-foot wraparound terrace with full 360-degree views spanning the Hollywood Hills to the Pacific Ocean.

The condominium building has a pool, a spa and a gym for residents.
