Given that over half the city’s residents don’t own a car, “Cash for Clunkers” wasn’t perhaps as big a boon for New Yorkers as it was for, say, the denizens of suburban Atlanta. Fret not, though. Early next year, the goverment is launching a new program locals might be better positioned to take advantage of — federal rebates subsidizing the purchase of new energy-efficient home appliances like refrigerators, air conditioners and boilers. Had your eye on a fancy new “Energy Star” dishwasher? Here’s your chance. Or, at the very least, your landlord might now have some incentive to replace your crummy old hot water heater.
